What to Do Immediately After an Accident

1. Ensure Safety First

  • Turn on your hazard lights.
  • Check for injuries to yourself, passengers, and others.
  • If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road or another safe location.

If anyone is injured, call emergency services immediately (Dial 119).

2. Call the Police (Dial 110)

In Japan, reporting all traffic accidents is legally required, even if the damage appears minor.

Calling the police is especially important if:

  • The other party refuses to share information
  • There is disagreement regarding fault
  • You need an official accident report for insurance purposes

3. Exchange Information With the Other Party

Please exchange the following information with the other driver:

  • Full name
  • Address and phone number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Vehicle license plate number
  • Insurance company name and policy number

If there are witnesses, try to obtain their contact information as well.

4. Document the Accident Scene

Use your smartphone to record as much information as possible:

  • Photos of vehicle damage (all vehicles involved)
  • The accident location and surrounding area
  • Road signs, traffic signals, and lane markings
  • Date, time, and weather conditions

These records are extremely helpful during the insurance claim process.

5. Contact Your Insurance Company

  • Notify your insurance company as soon as possible and follow their instructions.
  • If you are driving a rental car, inform the rental company immediately.

If you are unsure which number to call, Novari Global Office can assist you in English and Chinese during business hours.
